FCMF Open House Showcases Composites Innovation | July 2018

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (July 11, 2018) – The Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility at the University of Tennessee hosted more than 130 guests for an Open House event. Attendees included researchers, industry partners and leaders from UT, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and IACMI.

Approximately 30 undergraduate and graduate students led facility tours, discussed their research and presented posters. Live demonstrations featured key manufacturing processes such as:

  • Sheet molding compounding

  • Extrusion-compression of long fibers

  • Laser cutting of fabrics

The event highlighted FCMF’s progress in advanced composites manufacturing, made possible through partnerships with IACMI, ORNL and industry collaborators. The facility focuses on innovations including:

  • Large-scale hybrid composites manufacturing

  • Resin transfer molding

  • Sustainable materials development

  • Composite recycling technologies

FCMF integrates multiple research programs, including NSF IUCRC and IACMI internships, while supporting workforce development through hands-on student training. The facility maintains collaborations with DOE, DOD and industry partners to address real-world manufacturing challenges.
