DALLAS (Oct. 16, 2018) – A research team from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, won the Best in Track: Green & Sustainability award at CAMX 2018 for their technical paper on recycled composites.
The paper, Calculating the Embodied Energy of Recycled Composites, earned recognition in the Outstanding Technical Paper Awards at the Composites and Advanced Materials Expo. The work provides a framework for assessing energy costs in composite material recycling processes.
Komal Kooduvalli, research supervisor at UT’s Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility, served as first author. Co-authors included Georgiana Blue, an undergraduate mechanical engineering student; Dr. Uday Vaidya, UT professor and IACMI chief technology officer; and Dr. Soydan Ozcan, senior scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The research supports sustainable manufacturing by quantifying energy use in composite recycling, a growing focus in materials science. CAMX, the largest composites industry event in North America, highlights innovations in advanced materials.
